Summer Newsletter

Check Out Our New Design!

We're thrilled to unveil a new website, newsletter design, and updated mission statement. Our dynamic new site features improved platforms and resources, including a searchable publications page that allows visitors to quickly locate resources by topic, region, and crop. While freshening up our online presence, we realized our mission statement needed an update to more clearly communicate the breadth and impact of our work. Our new mission statement is to advance ethical seed solutions to meet food and farming needs in a changing world. We hope you like it, and rest assured that while this language has changed, our program work has not. We remain focused on research, education, and advocacy to help address the organic seed needs of farmers.

A Dynamic Look at 2016

We're pleased to publish our 2016 Annual Report via a dynamic online platform. The report highlights the progress we made in 2016 to advance organic seed, and does so on a platform that puts people and planet first. Rather than print a full-color catalog of the year that was, we display our 2016 financial report and highlights of our research, education, and advocacy work as an online publication that readers can flip through or scroll for more details.

Call for proposals: 9th Organic Seed Growers Conference

We invite you to help shape the 9th Organic Seed Growers Conference by providing proposals for content. This is your opportunity to share important research and ask timely questions related to organic seed. The conference is the largest organic seed event in the U.S. and provides a two-day agenda of presentations, panel discussions, and networking events. We welcome your proposals for presentations, workshops, posters, panels, and roundtables. Proposals must be submitted by July 24, 2017. Save the date to join us February 14-17, 2018, in Corvallis, Oregon!

Talking Organic Seed Policy on Capitol Hill

The organic food industry continues to boom, with sales exceeding $43 billion in 2016. Unfortunately, domestic production isn't keeping up with consumer demand for organic products. One problem is that increased consumer demand hasn't been met with an increase in public research investments. For example, funding for the Organic Research and Extension Initiative (OREI), the USDA's flagship organic research program, has been relatively stagnant since 2010. Over the last few months, OSA has traveled twice to Washington, DC, to meet with elected officials and their staffers about the importance of increased funding in organic research.

Calling for Resistance to Seed Industry Mergers

Last year chemical and seed giants Monsanto and Bayer announced a $66 billion merger. A decision is expected in 2017 and is happening in the context of two other seed industry mega-mergers. News of these mergers is devastating to family farmers who already operate under the pressures of sever market concentration at nearly every stage of the food and fiber production chain, beginning with seed. That's why OSA joined other concerned organizations in cosponsoring a Congressional briefing earlier this moth focused on the last merger still awaiting approval.

Stronger Hand Needed on GE Regulations

The organic community is increasingly challenged by genetically engineered (GE) crops (also known as GMOs) showing up in organic seed and crops. In 2014, OSA conducted a survey of U.S. organic crop growers and found that the majority of these farmers (71%) believe that federal regulations overseeing GE crop approvals aren't adequate for protecting their farm products. New and improved regulations, coupled with stronger oversight and enforcement, are long overdue. That's why we submitted comments this month in response to USDA's proposal to comprehensively update its biotechnology regulations for the first time since they were developed in 1987. Unfortunately, the proposal as written takes U.S. policy backwards.

Business Member Spotlight

OSA invites companies in the organic sector to support our work through our recently launched business membership program. This month we're proud to feature one of these members and a long-time partner: Organically Grown Company (OGC). OGC is the largest organic produce distributor in the Pacific Northwest. Between collaborating on research in the field and co-hosting the biennial Organicology conference, OSA counts OGC among the top businesses committed to advancing organic seed for the good of their growers and as a driver of change in our food and agricultural systems.
