Dear Nyéléni Focal Points!

Strengthen the Human Rights of Peasants www.peasantsrights.eu

At the Nyéléni Europe Forum in Cluj the idea for an E-Petition in support of the recognition of Peasants' Rights was first developed. Now a large coalition for Peasants’ Rights (Hands on the Land partners and Nyéléni Europe) has launched an online petition “Strengthen the Human Rights of Peasants”! This petition asks the EU and its Member States to actively participate in good faith in the elaboration of the "UN Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and other People Working in Rural Areas". The aim of the petition is to generate citizen support/pressure for a positive change in the EUs attitude towards the Peasant Rights process at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Join the movement and ask for the adoption of the UN Declaration on Peasants’ Rights! No peasants, no food. Let’s grow their rights! Join the movement for Peasants’ Rights and ask the EU and its Member States to actively participate in good faith in the elaboration of a "UN Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and other People Working in Rural Areas". Demand from your Ministry of Foreign Affairs to recognize Peasants’ Rights, including their rights to land, seeds, biodiversity, decent income and livelihood and the means of production. Demand the right of peoples to food sovereignty now by signing this petition. Help us to spread out this message #PeasantsRights throughout Europe and share this petition with your colleagues, in your country and your networks and Food Sovereignty plattforms.

We use the Policat e-petition tool, which allows us to do multilingual petitions. If you want to translate the petition in your language please let us know: astrid@fian.be So far we have: bulgarian, german, englisch, spanish, french, hungarian, italian, dutch, romanian and swedish. The petition's key message can't be modified, whereas you can adapt the "background" paragraph with your own national/local information. The petition will be hosted on the website https://peasantsrights.eu/ The petition can be easily embedded in websites. Even for third parties that want to support the cause.

Our objective is to have as many signatures as possible by May! Most of the lobbying work takes place at the UN Human Rights Council during sessions of the intergovernmental working group, with the next session scheduled for 15-19 May 2017. In order to put pressure on our governments, we need to strengthen our position and give it a strong and large echo throughout Europe.
